The main line through the country is the southern link of the route down to the coast at Bar from Belgrade which passes through the capital Podgorica and at just 32 euros for the 11 hour journey (first class) must be the railway bargain of the year: nearby is one of the main highlights of the journey, the Mala Rijeka viaduct, until 2001 the highest railway bridge in the world at 200 metres above the river below. From Podgorica is a short stretch of track carrying passenger traffic to Niksic the country’s second city about an hour away. All track is electrified standard gauge. The Balkan Flexipass can be purchased in both 2nd and 1st class for travel in Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania (only valid on CFR Calatori services), Serbia, Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
